Number Sense




 Unit 2

This unit will focus on deepening your child’s understanding of number relationships, counting, and place value.

The Learning Goals for this unit are to
  • Read and print number words to 20.
  • Build numbers with concrete materials.
  • Estimate the number of objects and check by counting.
  • Count forward to 100 and backwards from 20 using a number line, a 100-chart, and a calculator
  • Count by 1’s, 2’s, 10’s, and 25’s.
  • Develop strategies for adding and subtracting.
Using a ten frame is a strategy for adding and subtracting.
Fact Families
Fun home activities to help develop and strengthen number sense concepts:
  • Gather 20 small objects (buttons, coins). Show your child a group of items and ask “how many? What number is two more? What number is one less?,...”
  • Ask your child to count a collection of about 40 small objects by grouping the objects in different ways (by pairs, groups of 5, groups of 10,…)
  • Share addition and subtraction story problems (e.g. There are 15 houses on our street. 9 of them have a garage. How many do not have a garage?”...
